Alexa came prepared with thoughtful questions and a curious heart. Before they even began the interview, Jim showed her the different types of oxygen support he uses daily, from his home concentrator to the tanks that help him stay mobile. He even explained the planning it takes to manage his condition, including medication schedules, cords around the house, and carrying supplies when he goes out.
Alexa’s project was so successful that her teacher kept it. Jim asked her to write a summary, and we are honored to share it with you. We hope you find it as sweet as we did.

Alexa’s Story
Jim excitedly agreed when I asked to interview him for a school project about how a respiratory medical condition affects his daily life. I asked Jim for this interview because he is an awesome family friend, and I wanted to learn more about his condition.
Pulmonary fibrosis is a type of lung disease that causes scarring in the lungs. Because of this damage, it can become harder for the lungs to move oxygen into the bloodstream.
Jim discovered he had pulmonary fibrosis because he had shortness of breath just from walking or going up the stairs, along with a persistent cough. His doctors performed CT imaging, X-rays, and a biopsy to diagnose him.

since he takes medicine at specific times of the day and with food. He also notices that his
energy level decreases easily.
Jim is always connected to a cord for oxygen from air tanks. He showed me his various air tanks that he relies on to get enough oxygen. He has a large air tank, his concentrator, to sleep through the night, mid-size air tanks (E) for shorter periods during the day, and while in the family room downstairs, and a smaller portable air tank (M-9) to leave the house. Anytime Jim leaves the house, he carries a heavy backpack with the portable air tank and other necessities.
When he walks around the house, he watches out for the cords laying on the ground from his air tanks, so he doesn’t trip. When he sleeps, it is difficult for him to get comfortable with the cords. He also has a noninvasive portable ventilator for rest. He also must think about how frequently he needs to order refills for his air tanks.
Jim was evaluated for a lung transplant twice. He traveled to St Louis and Omaha for
consultations, but unfortunately, discovered both times it was too risky.
Jim’s advice to those who are getting diagnosed is to stay healthy and exercise a lot!
Alexa is a sixth-grade student who interviewed PF Warriors member Jim for a school project about respiratory conditions. She chose to learn more about pulmonary fibrosis because Jim is a family friend, and she wanted to better understand how the disease affects his everyday life.
